Box Office Analysis (8.7.26-8.9.26)
Spider-Man Continues its Dominance, The Odyssey Has Some Long Legs, and Newcomers Stumble Out The Gate
Spider-Man ruled the box office again, pulling in $145 million in North America for the third largest second weekend ever (behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens at $149 million and Avengers: Endgame at $147 million). This massive haul puts it at $1.67 billion globally in just 12 days. With a domestic total of more than $650 million, the question becomes whether Brand New Day can become the first movie in history to eclipse $1 billion at the domestic box office (Star Wars: The Force Awakens holds the current domestic crown at $936 million). We’ll find out soon.
Let us not forget about Christopher Nolan and his Greek epic. The Odyssey became his highest grossing film ever at $1.1 billion globally… and counting (passing The Dark Knight Rises). It is also now the second highest grossing R-rated movie ever (behind Deadpool & Wolverine’s $1.33 billion). In its fourth weekend, it pulled in $31.5 million which would be a good opening for most films. While its overall success may be outshined by Spider-Man, we shouldn’t sleep on the success of The Odyssey.
There were two new films that were hoping for some success at theaters this week… neither of them got it. One Night Only and Super Troopers 3 both underperformed at the box office, although both will probably make it up in the ancillary market (streaming, PVOD, etc.), especially considering their modest estimated budgets (One Night Only at $25 million, and Super Troopers 3 somewhere between $13.5 million and $20 million).
To round out the top five is a movie that a lot of people already forgot about (even though it was the number one movie of 2026 until it was surpassed by both Spider-Man and The Odyssey)... Toy Story 5. In its eighth weekend, it was in the top five again, adding to its already impressive $1+ billion global haul. Disney needed to show folks it still has it.
A Look Ahead…
While The End of Oak Street and PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie will try and compete this weekend, don’t expect either to take the number one spot. They’re both really just seeing if they can beat The Odyssey out for number two.
